Monthly Archives: July 2013

This Saturday 13 July FREEDOMMUNE will be happening again at Makuhari Messe. It is free entry, but they are asking for a donation of at least 1,000 yen to go towards relief efforts for the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant. It has been almost 2.5 years since these ‘triple disasters’ occurred, but Japan is still struggling to rebuild and work out how to manage the fallout of what became the 2nd worst nuclear disaster in human history. Dommune has been very active in trying to support those affected and to help raise awareness about the many problems and challenges that remain. FREEDOMMUNE is an exciting, important and very unique way of contributing to the rebuilding of Tohoku (and hopefully Japan). The collection of artists is a strange and wonderful collage reflecting Ukawa’s creativity and open-mind. I have no idea what these robot things are, but it seems they will be there along with many others, including Milton Bradley, NHK, and DJ Nobu… With too many promoters being too timid and conventional in the way they doing things, big, bold statements like FREEDOMMUNE are really valuable for their contribution to the electronic music scene here. The fact that it is also trying to raise money and awareness for a valuable cause makes it even more worthy of support.

So if you are free this weekend and are looking for something fun to do, register for FREEDOMMUNE, and come along. You can register here:

And if you cannot speak Japanese but would like to come, you can email me by Friday morning with the full names of anyone who wants to come, and I can add you to the MNML SSGS list. Please email: mnmlssg AT gmail DOT com

I am also very happy to say that I will be DJing at FREEDOMMUNE. I feel honoured to have been asked and I have been working hard to prepare something interesting. I’ll be playing music spanning the last 50 years and will be focusing on powerful sonics and sound design. I don’t play on big systems too often, so I am going to make full use of this opportunity! You can find information about all the artists playing here:

And if you can’t make it on Saturday, tune in, the music starts from 18:30 on the Saturday, and finishes at 5:30. Keep an eye on the MNML SSGS and Dommune twitter accounts for more info.
